Unfortunately, pregnancy is not a breeze for every mother. Somewomen have complications that can keep her bedridden at home oreven at the hospital. For the expectant mother, waiting for thebirth of a child from bed is lousy. A baby shower can becustomized around her situation to brighten her day, giving herhope while lifting her spirits.
Instead of waiting on the birth of the baby, go ahead and planthe shower with close family members and friends, bringing theshower to her. Remember, after the baby is born, a full-scaleshower can always follow. However, for this type of shower, guests should create a miniature gift box or basket. Great ideasof what might be offered include:

•Video tapes or DVDs are nice in that she can watch her favoritetelevision shows or movies while still getting the rest needed.
•A day spa certificate to include massage, facial, pedicure, andmanicure for after her baby is born would provide her withsomething to look forward to but you might also go in with otherpeople in having a reflexologist or masseuse come to her.

By Steve Gillman, Fri Dec 9th
Want a fun way to tune up your brain? Why not use some classicmind games to help you increase your brainpower and get you outof your thinking “ruts.” Good mind games habituate you to usingcreative problem solving as a normal part of thinking aboutthings.
One lateral thinking puzzle you can try right now involves ninedots, layed out three by three. You have to connect them allwith four straight lines, and without lifting the pen or pencilfrom the paper. Figure this one out and you’ll appreciate theexpression “thinking outside of the box.”
Mind Games For Groups
Some group mind games are especially good for long trips in acar. For example, someone looks out the window and randomlychooses an object. Everyone in the car then tries to imagine anew way to make money with it. Street signs become places toadvertise, trees are sold with names, and a truck becomes atraveling grocery store.
The “change of perspective” technique can be used as aproblem-solving game. Pick any topic, and see who can come upwith the most unique new perspective. Could there be a worldwhere jobs weren’t necessary? How would a virus define moralityif it was conscious?
Another creative game for a group uses a specific technique, called “concept combination.” Simply combine random concepts orthings in interesting ways, and see who has the best idea. Achair and a microwave? Maybe an easy-chair with a built-incooler, microwave and television, or microwavable “couchpotatoes” - a potato snack in the shape of a couch.
Games
Some lateral-thinking puzzles use a scenario, real or imagined, with a selection of things you have to use to accomplishsomething. Imagine a ping-pong ball in an iron pipe that’s setin cement. The pipe sticks up two-feet high, and has almost thesame diameter as the ball. With only a box of frosted-flakes,and a t-shirt, how many ways can you find to get the ball out ofthe pipe? You could also set this up for real, to know if aproposed solution will really work.
Riddles are just mind games or lateral-thinking puzzles. Youmove laterally in your mind, away from your usual line ofthought, to solve a riddle. What did his friends do when thecanibal was late for dinner? Gave him the cold shoulder. Keepingyour brain in shape doesn’t have to be a matter of seriousstudy, does it?
