Jigsaw comprise of a congress of small tiles that are intended to be fitted together in order to generate an image or any structure. Flat jigsaw normally turn into imitations of photographs or paintings when they are done, and three dimensional jigsaw could further be used to generate repetitions of well known buildings, boxes, or other unusual shapes. The could be made trickier with huge numbers of strangely shaped pieces, or less tricky with fewer, larger pieces. Additionally it serves as educational tools for children; jigsaw are as well extremely admired with adults.

The initial jigsaw puzzle came in to view have been introduced in 1762, by John Spilbury, a British mapmaker. In the United States, the attractiveness of jigsaw poured during the 1930s. The Great Depression destined that many more people were fed up at home, and jigsaw assisted to fill their hours. Cardboard was a supporting material of choice for creating jigsaw puzzles, other than more luxurious and difficult to cut wooden backings. Some companies gave jigsaw away to recurrent customers, and libraries permitted patrons to check out jigsaw to play at home.

Huge numbers of contemporary jigsaw are made with linking puzzle pieces. These pieces have bumps that could break into matching holes, making sure that a solved piece of the puzzle remains together. Some as well slot in pieces with smooth edges, or pieces in eccentric shapes like starbursts that fit together with other strange shapes to generate a total puzzle. Jigsaw could be made in any shape, and are at times also printed on double sides, to make solving them trickier.

When purchasing jigsaw for your young kids hunt for a particularly intended children’s puzzle. These are generally intended with extra big pieces so that infants and toddlers may not stifle on the pieces if they try to consume them. Bigger children could work on more conformist jigsaw puzzles, but you might desire to deem a puzzle with lesser pieces, so that the child is not aggravated. Adults, it is acknowledged, do not eat their puzzles, and take pleasure in frustrating themselves with jigsaw that could probably have thousands of pieces.
It has long been acknowledged that mind and games are great for children, and Sudoku for kids is no different.

Kids sudoku are a great activity for children of all ages. Not only does sudoku encourage the use of logic and problem solving skills, it also develops brain power and introduces basic math skills to children of a very young age. The focus required by children to solve mental such as sudoku contributes to the development of children’s’ concentration, patience and attention span. Kids also gain great satisfaction from completing a puzzle on their own, which can lead to greater confidence in their mathematical and educational pursuits (which, of course, means an easier and more enjoyable time at school).

Sudoku IS suitable for kids of all ages. However, it is important that children are only given that are suitable for their own age or level. Kids quickly become frustrated and discouraged if are too hard. The majority of sudoku which appear in magazines and newspapers (even the easiest of them) are too difficult for kids. Sudoku specifically designed with children in mind are available readily on the internet. such as these are often smaller in size (the smallest being 4 x 4), and contain more clues than an ordinary sudoku puzzle would (regular sudoku may contain as few as 30-35 clues in a 9 x 9 puzzle, where as sudoku for kids should contain approximately 50-55 clues per 9 x 9 puzzle). Sudoku constructed with increasing levels of difficulty are perfect as they allow each child to develop in his or her own time. Children can begin with easy kids sudoku (4 x 4) and progress through to the harder at their own pace. Sudoku really are suitable for children of all academic abilities.

Sudoku are great for use with children either at home or in the classroom. The uses are truly only limited by your imagination. Use as a time-filling activity, a fun weekend homework exercise, a part of everyday classroom routine, a bonding activity between children and parents or grandparents or as boredom buster for children on long road trips or flights. However you choose to use printable kids sudoku puzzles, you can be sure kids will become interested and willingly involved in their education. Sudoku may even convince children that learning can be fun and enjoyable.

And, best of all, kids LOVE sudoku! In this day and age of technology, introducing kids to sudoku may even encourage children to spend recreational time away from the digital devices, such as the TV, video games and computers, that they love so much. Instead you may find them indulging in a fun, yet productive and educational, past-time.

Available on the internet is numerous resources which provide sudoku for kids. Print off as many as required at one time or print off the whole lot to have literally hours of fun, educational activities for your children or students.
Brooke Watson uses Sudoku puzzles with kids to help them develop problem solving skills, logical thinking and creativity while they have fun. She has created a collection of sudoku number puzzles and word puzzles for children at www.kids-sudoku-puzzles.com

By Professor Homunculus
You many have just heard of KenKen. It’s the invention of a Japanese math teacher named Tetsuya Miyamoto, who says, “I believe that if you give children good learning materials, they will think and learn and grow on their own.” Imagine that!

KenKen is a brilliant puzzle which takes the logic of a sudoku puzzle, and adds the use of basic arithmetic to make KenKen a truly fascinating challenge on many levels.

But you don’t have to be a math whiz to play KenKen. The rules are truly easy to learn. A typical grid has 16 squares, with four rows and four columns. Just as in sudoku, you must use the digits from one to four in each row and in each column. You cannot repeat a digit in a row or column.

KenKen has the additional trait that some groups of squares are bounded together by a bold border. Within those squares is a number, say 6, and a mathematical operation sign, say a plus (+) sign. That simply means that the digits in those squares must add up to the number 6.

If you’d had the number 15 with a multiplication (x)sign next to it in two squares bordered in bold, you’d know that the digits that go in those squares must multiply to 15.

Simple enough? Yes, it is – even a second grader can start doing KenKen puzzles. That’s how easy it is to begin. But the level of play can get tougher – much tougher.

KenKen can be played on grids of 6×6 squares, or 8×8, or even 9×9 squares.

Filling in the 81 cells of a 9×9 grid can take hours, or days. Or more! Once you start though, you’ll find the time to do KenKen. You won’t be able to stop! Your mind will learn so much logic and arithmetic, without you even noticing.

KenKen is possibly the best brain exercise you ever may try. That’s why you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you are a parent or a teacher, KenKen can become the greatest tool in your educational toolkit to get your child or students interested in math.

KenKen doesn’t feel like math at all – it’s just pure fun

You can get free, downloadable KenKen at http://kenken.com.
Kakuro are considered by some as the harder version of its more famous partner, the Sudoku puzzles. Kakuro are also considered by enthusiasts as modified versions of crossword puzzles, where numbers, instead of words, are used.

Actually, Kakuro have several similarities to the typical crossword puzzle. For one, the grid in a Kakuro very much resembles the grid used in American crossword puzzle. Also, in a crossword game, a clue is provided but its correct answer is limited to the number of squares provided by the game as well as by the intersecting answers. This is very much the same thing with Kakuro, where a player must find the two single digits that will add up to a specific value but must be limited to the number of squares provided as well as on the intersecting sums. Note must also be given to the fact that in a Kakuro game, no sum should contain the same digit twice.

Kakuro puzzles, more commonly referred as Cross Sum in its early days of development, are not entirely new. They have enjoyed tremendous as well as continuous popularity in Japan since 1986. However, the awareness of the game’s existence, especially in the United States and in many parts of the Western world, has risen only very recently. In this regard, it does not come as a big surprise to see major websites nowadays taking advantage of the puzzle’s growing popularity by dedicating their page or pages to Kakuro in the past month or so. Blogs that discuss Kakuro techniques and solutions are also increasing by leaps and bounds.

The latest news about the Kakuro is that Conceptis Puzzles, the world leader in the international logic market, has launched last February a modern version of the puzzle game, which it appropriately called Conceptis Kakuro. The puzzle company has secured the services of King Features to handle the syndication of the game to daily newspapers all around the world. In addition, Conceptis is also set to release several Kakuro magazines and books in the coming months in cooperation with several international publishing houses.

Conceptis said its version of the Kakuro involved the use of correlation algorithm to make the puzzle really easy, so that the greatest number of people possible can get to enjoy playing the game to the maximum. The Kakuro algorithm creates in the game one starting point in each one of the four blocks, and makes sure that conflicts do not emerge when players begin to solve the puzzle all the way to its logical conclusion.

Kakuro puzzles, Conceptis style, are reported to be available in six different levels, ranging from the very easy to the extremely difficult. They also come in different sizes such as the 8 by 8, the 10 by 10, the 12 by 12, the 14 by 14, just to name a few. This makes the Kakuro of Conceptis more fun and exciting to solve and a perfect fixture in many newspapers as well as books in any part of the world.
By Simon Gibson
In these days of seventh generation games consoles and MMORPGs, the good old classic puzzle is still as popular as it ever was.

From the meteoric rise of suduko over the last six years, to the traditional crossword puzzle which soon celebrates its hundredth birthday, are as old as time and they aren’t going away.

The success of Dan Brown’s novels and their subsequent film adaptations just go to show how much they can capture the imagination of the masses.

So what is it that keeps us coming back for more after all these years and what does the future hold for our favourite pastime?

The fact is that people like nothing more than the feeling of satisfaction that they get when they have risen to the challenge and solved that which at first seems unsolvable.

Successful puzzle creator and editor Will Shortz sums it up perfectly:

“Puzzles in general, I think, they give you a sense of being in control and putting the universe in order,” Shortz says. “With puzzles, you see the whole process through. Each puzzle you solve is a little mystery.”

The advent of the internet has only proved to further their popularity. Once a solitary pursuit, puzzle solving has now evolved. Online communities are springing up all over the net, giving people an opportunity to share their experience.

When once puzzlers were limited by the knowledge which they had stored within their memory, now they literally have all of the information in the world at their fingertips.

The traditional treasure hunt has become a whole different experience altogether. Treasure hunters taking part in games such as those found as cashhunt.co.uk can now take virtual tours of the locations which they are investigating; something which Kitt Williams could have barely imagined when he first wrote the seminal armchair treasure hunt book, Masquerade.

In short, are here to stay. They will be around a long time after this week’s latest trend in gaming is gone and forgotten.

They stimulate and they captivate, they infuriate and they educate, but most of all they are just plain simple fun.

Never underestimate the power of puzzles.
By Marlon Gamble
Kakuro are the latest craze that is currently making great waves in the puzzle game field. It also has played a significant impact in many areas around the world. These are closely following the footsteps of the Sudoku that is currently enjoying worldwide success. Kakuro are also known as a numbers game, which require simple and pure logic as well as a basic knowledge of the addition and subtraction mathematical concepts.

Also referred as Cross Sums, especially during its early days, Kakuro are also considered by many as the numerical equivalent of the crossword puzzle. This is because it makes use of numbers instead of the usual words. And just like the crossword, the Kakuro also comes in various sizes, from the compact size to the giant size, and ranges, from the very easy to the extremely hard.

The modern version of Kakuro nowadays comes in a variety of forms. While the traditional type, which is of the square and rectangular shape, is still around, referred to as the classic kakuro, there are other variations of the puzzle game which have already been developed and which can surely catch the attention of many puzzle game enthusiasts. There is, for instance, the holey kakuro, which is similar to the classic kakuro, except for the fact that it has holes in the middle. Then there is the round kakuro which, as its name suggests, is round on the outside, although the shape is actually more diamond-like, with some versions having holes in the middle as well.

Today, with the advent of modern technology, Kakuro now also come out in computer software program formats, which naturally makes the game more enjoyable to play, in terms of visuals. The puzzle has also found it way on the worldwide web, where kakuro players are given the opportunity to try to solve the puzzle online. One can even get to see how other players are faring as far as solving the puzzle is concerned. Kakuro news and articles as well as various techniques and strategies designed to either make the game more enjoyable to play or make it easier to solve are also available on the internet.

However, many people still prefer to play Kakuro the old-fashioned or traditional way, which is the pen-pushing method. That is why the game is still being published in many newspapers as well as magazines. This is part of the reason why a new monthly magazine, known as the Kakuro Light, was conceptualized. Formally launched last March in the Netherlands by Sanoma Uitgevers B.V., the magazine, of course, carries the popular Kakuro and is marketed primarily for beginners of the game who are nevertheless eager to know how the puzzle is being played as well as finding out why this new puzzle kind in town is fast gaining the imagination as well as fancy of everyone who just happens to love the thrill of a puzzle game.
Are you looking for a good way to help your child grow? Have you ever thought about the benefits that have to offer?

There are many primary skills that a child can develop when constructing puzzles. Persistence and adaptable thinking are learned as kids search for different ways to make puzzle pieces fit together properly. A child’s hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are improved by maneuvering the puzzle pieces and fitting them in their proper locations. Assembling helps children enthusiastically apply crucial skills such as suggestive and deductive reasoning, categorizing, problem solving, and classifying.

The most important thing to consider when picking out a puzzle is the age of your child. The puzzle should be thought-provoking, but not so difficult that it discourages your child. Other things that you should take into consideration are ease of use, durability, and number of pieces. Although all three are important, the following rule of thumb can be helpful when determining the appropriate puzzle to select. Even though babies lack the hand-eye coordination to put a puzzle together, they are attracted to bright puzzle pieces, as well as that make sounds. As babies move into their toddler and preschool years, large-piece with pegs or knobs aid in the development of a child’s hand-eye coordination and problem solving abilities, while sound help them associate sounds with objects. At this age, children learn that if a piece does not fit a certain way that it can fit a different way.

Puzzles with smaller pieces help older preschoolers to continue developing their skills by challenging them to look for more details within the puzzle. These details can include matching pieces using colors or locating pieces that form an object.

Finally, one must consider the durability of a puzzle. The younger a child is, the more durable a puzzle must be. Therefore, wooden and rubber are a much better match for little children, such as infants and toddlers, while cardboard are much more suitable for pre-school and school-age children.
